Sometimes you want to be able to communicate with customers who purchased a particular product. Here’s two ways to find them.

As you may know, you can go to the orders list in WooCommerce and click into every order, where you will see displayed who the customer is, and what they purchased. This isn’t terribly efficient though if you are looking for, say, 100 customers.

You can then go into each order and retrieve the details of each customer.

This method is good, but again not terribly useful if you need the details for many customers, or if you have products with similar names.

Once installed, you can click on any product, and see a list of all of the customers who purchased that product. Not only that, but you can also print the list, export it to a spreadsheet, or even email all of the cutsomers directly – it puts all of the emails into a single email, so I may not recommend this option – the exports are fantastic though!

There are a lot of settings for different columns that can be added or removed from this list, and there’s also a premium version that adds more options. To date though the basic version has met all of our needs.

One afternoon this past June we received an email from a client whose site we had built about 2 years ago, but hadn’t heard from in a long time. We like to stay in touch with clients after a site launches, but it doesn’t always happen. In this case the client was a fairly large organization, and after launch they’d been maintaining the site on their own.

The site is WordPress built with Divi, as most of our client sites are (we specialized in Divi), had multiple languages, and quite a few plugins to support the various features & functionality in use on the site.

They’d been operating under the assumption that the problem was with Divi. They couldn’t get the editor to load, and had been reaching out to Elegant Themes (makers of Divi) for support, but ET weren’t able to help them.

It wasn’t until about 6 pm that we heard from them – but if there is one thing that bothers me it is a site that isn’t performing, so I logged in to have a look.

I couldn’t believe how slow the back end was.

Forget page editing; just moving between menu items was brutal – like clicking on Pages, Settings, or Plugins. I tried to load the page editor and gave up waiting for it.

On checking the Site Health screen I found it reporting a “Severely outdated SQL server“. I googled the version they were running and found that it had reached its end of life in 2013 – almost 10 years ago! That wasn’t necessarily the issue, but it certainly wasn’t helping. Needless to say, we didn’t host this website (before, we do now).

After trying to look around a bit more for the source of the issue I decided to take a backup copy of the site instead. Rather than troubleshooting at molasses speed, I wanted to bring a copy of the site up on one of our hosting servers – one we knew didn’t have any underlying issues.

12 hours later the backup still hadn’t finished.

Assuming it had hung up somehow I cancelled the backup, set up a different backup process, and crossed my fingers. This time it finished in about an hour and a half, and generated a 20GB backup file. This was a bit surprising – I knew they had a lot of images, but this was much larger than I expected.

I restored the backup on one of our development servers, logged into the back end, and right away it was much faster. I could easily move from section to section, and proceeded to look at page editing.

Divi still wouldn’t load though. I updated Divi and still no luck. While it is possible that there is a problem with Divi – I didn’t think it likely. We look after a number of clients sites and none had similiar issues.

Suspecting it was some sort of plugin conflict I had a look at the plugins that were installed. There were all the ones we’d installed when we launched the site, and then a number of others that had been installed since. One plugin jumped out at me as being one that could possible cause the issue – and sure enough, I disabled that plugin and Divi loaded.

After moving the site and applying this one change I asked the client to test out the site. Their feedback was “Uber fast by comparison [… to their own site]”

There was still more to do, though at this point it came down mostly to standard website maintenance, some user training, and some bad code added by one of their in-house developers.

“the front end editing display doesn’t display like it used to”: at some point they’d flipped the front end editing mode into wireframe mode – there is a setting for it on the page – I changed it back

even once the mode was set correctly, the editing display was still somewhat broken. The site could be edited in the front end, but the formatting was off.
This took a bit longer to track down. At some point in adding an online learning system someone on their team had added some code to the sites functions.php file. I commented it all out and the front end display was back to the way it should be. Then it was just a matter of debugging that code a bit.

That plugin that was breaking divi just needed an update – and a number of other plugins were updated as well

We added the caching plugin we typically use (WP Rocket) – actually I think re-added. I’m pretty sure it would have been there when we launched the site. We also did some other site optimization to get it moving even faster.

and other random bits and bobs

At the end of the day, the source of months of pain came down to just a couple of things:

a poorly performing server with out of date software

custom code added to the site that was breaking editing functions

some out of date plugins

and a little bit of a user training issue.

Thats a lost opportunity for new business. Every new page, section, news or blog article can be optimized. With ecommerce sites the opportunity is even greater, with each product typically having a page to itself.

Optimizing the content on your website helps google better understand what your products or services are so it can show you off to people who are searching.

When we take on the maintenance of new clients website, we often find:

sites that have had no search engine optimization applied to them whatsoever, OR

sites that were optimized when they were first built, but no new content has been optimized since the launch (not to mention keeping up with changes to google, the market, the industry, etc.)

There are varying levels of optimization, from basics like making sure that every image has a description and the html structure of the page is in proper order (one H1 tag on a page, followed by H2 tags and body copy, etc.) to massaging the content so that it emphasizes the subject areas that you would like your site to come up in Google and the other search engines.

There are tools that can help with this. We most often use Rankmath, but Yoast is very good as well, and for more advanced analysis SEM Rush and Uber Suggest are good.

Of course, we do this as well. Let me know if you’d like us to check/update the optimization of your site.

They are when a “bad actor” purchases a product from your online store, and then tries to pay with a stolen, fake, or otherwise fraudulent credit card. Not just one credit card though, when the transaction comes back as declined they try another, and then another.

It’s all automated, and over the course of a few hours they can test 1000s of credit cards. This can result in your merchant account temporarily being shut down, and put fake orders into your website. Depending on how they do it, it could show up as just one bad order, or it be hundreds (or more).

We’ve worked with a few clients who have been hit with these types of velocity attacks over the past year to secure their ecommerce site. If you have an ecommerce site, and you’d like to discuss options to prevent credit card velocity attacks, please get in touch with us.

Sometimes its the odd email here and there, but at other times you can open your inbox and find 100s of pieces of spam email that have come through your website.

Captcha plugins (I am not a robot) help to block this kind of spam, but its a constant back and forth. Captchas get upgraded, then the spammer skills get better, and so it continues.

It’s a saga that has been going on as long as we’ve been building websites. Typically its spammers probing contact forms to test if they can exploit them for their own uses. Other times is just random sales messages that are clearly just crawling the web looking for contact forms to send though.

CleanTalk is not free, but at around $12/yr (USD) its almost a no-brainer (less if you have multiple sites). Once its installed you can pretty much forget about it. It provides a counter at the top of the wordpress admin, which you can click on for more stats, but other than that it pretty much just does its thing.

Check it out at CleanTalk, and/or if you’d like assistance setting this up on your site, give us a shout.

CleanTalk has a nice, if somewhat basic reporting dashboard, which if you have an account with multiple sites will show you the stats across all.

Are you certain that people are browsing your ecommerce website, but you’re just not seeing the sales you’d expect?

Statistics show that on average, about 72% of shopping carts are abandoned – that is shoppers add things to their shopping cart, but never check out.

What if you could bring some of those shoppers back?

First things first, what is your shops cart abandonment rate? Is it about on par with e-commerce in general? Better? Worse?

The formula to work out your abandonment rate is: 100 x (1 – ( completed purchases ÷ shopping carts with items an them)

As example, if last month your website had 200 orders, and 700 created shopping carts (so 500 abandoned carts), your Abandonment rate for the month would be:

100 x (1 – (200 ÷ 700) = 71.43%

About on par with e-commerce in general. If its better, good for you! Is there anything you can do to make it better? If its worse, what could you do to improve it?

What If You Could Get Some of Those Shoppers Back?

Statistics show that 45% of cart abandonment emails are opened (you know, those emails that say “Hey, you left something in your shopping cart”), 50% of those opened are clicked through, and 50% of those who click through make a purchase.

If my math is right, that means about 10% of those abandoned carts can be recovered.

Based on my example above, how does an extra 50 sales a month sound?

How Is It Done?

Clearly you want it to be automatic, and if you’re using using WooCommerce, there are various methods and plugins that can do this for you.

Recently we’ve been working with the Abandoned Cart plugin from Tyche Softwares.

They’ve got two versions, a free ‘lite’ version, and a paid pro version.

The free version will actually do all the basics, including tracking abandoned carts, capturing email addresses when possible and emailing those who have abandoned their carts reminder emails – multiple emails at set intervals if you’d like.

The pro version does more, including multiple ways to capture email addresses, and the ability to add coupons right into those recovery emails.

There’s a full comparison of the lite versus pro version at: https://www.tychesoftwares.com/differences-between-pro-and-lite-versions-of-abandoned-cart-for-woocommerce-plugin/

If you’re not emailing shoppers who abandon their shopping cart, you’re leaving money on the table.

If you’d like assistance setting this up on your site, give us a shout.
